Faces of Islam
Summer 2009
Size: 30 x 36”
limited series of 8

Textile wall hanging / construction Stretched vinylized spandex on plywood support.

Additional materials include: industrial metal parts and expanded foam.

Another editorial comment- this time on those iconic visages of Islamic women that have so obsessed recent media producers. For me, the masking of the visage, as is masking of breasts, are parallel affectations of a mostly masculine need to limit the exposition of sexual attractors in public.

The unique line forms of Arabic architectural arches inspired the shape, especially evident in observing the negative space of the form. The special woven spandex used here is highly elastic, easily revealing the face forms underneath- so in a funny way- this one has no secrets. Yet- that’s exactly what it’s about.
